Page Background

The Benjamin Rothman Kadoorie School is still in its early stages. The school is set to grow and comprise

of two main age-groups – the younger children, from the ages of twelve to sixteen, will be focused on basic

learning and life-skills. The older group of sixteen to twenty-one will largely be concerned with preparing to

graduate as young adults capable of leading independent lives in their communities. And while the faculty

is working on its own teaching methods and ethos, a wider process of integrating their special students into

the Kadoorie community is ongoing. “We know that our children will always need a level of protection and

guidance,” says Maoz. “But we can equip them with skills to live within a normal community and to have a

connection with people outside”.

In the next few years, the Benjamin Rothman School students will be much more involved in the Kadoorie

life. There are plans to adapt the village’s farm so they can work there and go on field trips together with

the other students. “Everything we do here is aimed at making our students, all of our students, better

citizens and creating a better Israeli society” says Roy Bar Ilan, the CEO of Kadoorie. As The Benjamin

Rothman School grows, Alumot Or plans that it will become a center of knowledge for other schools for

children with autism, in Israel and abroad. A second school based on the Benjamin Rothman Kadoorie

model is already being planned to be built down south in the Negev Desert. “Having a school like this”

says Moti Dotan, head of the Lower Galilee regional council, “doesn’t just ensure that we can address the

needs of our children, it makes our entire community much stronger”.
